Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Medicaid renewal below.

What is Medicaid Renewal?

Medicaid renewal is how MDHHS checks to see if you still qualify for Medicaid. During your renewal, they’ll review your information to make sure you’re still eligible. If you still qualify, your Medicaid coverage will continue.

How often do I need to renew my Medicaid

Most people renew their Medicaid once a year, but some people may need to renew more often.

When it’s time to renew, MDHHS will let you know. You may get a letter in the mail, a message in MI Bridges, or a renewal packet with instructions.

How do I know when it is time to renew my Medicaid?

When it’s time to renew, MDHHS will let you know. Watch for:

  • A letter from MDHHS
  • A message in your MI Bridges account
  • A renewal packet mailed to your home

Be sure to keep your mailing address, phone number, and email up to date so you don’t miss important notices.

How do I update my contact information?

You can update your contact information anytime in MI Bridges, the State of Michigan’s online benefits portal. You can also:

  • Update your address, phone number, or email
  • Check when it’s time to renew
  • Upload requested documents
  • Complete your Medicaid renewal

What documents do I need for renewal?

To complete your renewal, MDHHS may ask you to provide documents that confirm your information. These may include:

  • Proof of income (such as pay stubs)
  • A photo ID or other identification
  • Information about the people in your household
  • Bank statements (if requested)
  • Information about other health insurance you have

The documents you need will depend on your situation.

How can I return my renewal forms?

You can submit your renewal in a few different ways:

  • Online through MI Bridges
  • By mail
  • By fax
  • In person at an MDHHS office

Be sure to sign your forms and send them back by the due date.

What happens if I miss my renewal deadline?

If you miss your renewal deadline, your Medicaid coverage could end.

If this happens, contact MDHHS as soon as possible. You may still be able to submit the information they need and have your case reviewed again.

What if I need more time to complete my renewal?

If you’re waiting for a document or need more time to finish your renewal, contact your MDHHS specialist or local office before your due date. You may be able to get more time to complete your renewal.

What if MDHHS asks for more documents?

Sometimes MDHHS may ask for more information before they can finish your Medicaid renewal. If that happens, they may send you a Verification Checklist.

A Verification Checklist tells you what information or documents MDHHS needs to review your renewal. Sending the requested information as soon as you can helps prevent delays and may help you keep your Medicaid coverage.

If you receive a Verification Checklist:

  • Read it carefully.
  • Gather the documents listed on the checklist.
  • Send the information back as soon as you can.

What happens if I don’t update?

If MDHHS can’t reach you, you could miss:

  • Your Medicaid renewal notice
  • Requests for documents or more information
  • Important instructions about your renewal

Missing these notices could delay your renewal or cause your Medicaid coverage to end.

Helpful Tip: If you’ve moved, changed your phone number, or have a new email address, update your information in MI Bridges right away—even if it’s not time to renew yet.

What if I lose my Medicaid Coverage?

If your Medicaid coverage ends, you may still have options for health insurance.

You may be able to enroll in a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
